Resurrection Barbecue

Resurrection Barbecue | 05/30
They line up with grocery bags and baskets giggles bubbling before GO! Black babies with beads, braids, bunny ears, afros, and fades bob through the yard in their Sunday best. cheerful children collecting eggs, candy, ice cream, flowers, and food blooming from garden beds and before we’re fed- peeps and pineapple, pasta, salad, mac n cheese, chicken greens and hot links fresh off the grill, the little chicks gather in a circle, baa like baby sheep, bow their heads, peeping out their prayers blessed, they thank God for our daily bread.
A short and sweet Easter Sunday poem inspired by my day and Jill Scott’s Family Reunion. Each day of poetry month, I like to study the works of other writers. Artress Bethany White, Cornelius Eady, and Honrée Fanonne Jeffers greatly influenced today’s poem with their works “Resurrection,” “Easter Shoes,” and “The Gospel of Barbecue.”
Spelmanite, illustrious illustrator, and poet Varnette P. Honeywood illuminates Black joy with her bold colors and shapes, which simplify our multitudes into charming tableaus. In the video below Varnette talks about choosing an art major, being a teaching artist and creating positive images for Black children.
Black blessings,
